Altitude Simulation is not a new phenomenon, but making its benefits available to the general public is. You might have heard of triathletes heading to high altitude destinations such as Boulder, Colorado to improve their fitness? Well, why they do this is because the higher you go in to altitude the less oxygen is available for your body. At altitude, your body has to work harder to transport the small amount of oxygen and does so by creating more red blood cells. The more red blood cells you have the more efficient and stronger your body becomes meaning that when you return to sea level your body makes better use of the extra oxygen available, improving performance and recovery. But it’s more than just fitness. Health and wellbeing benefits such as greater breathing control, assistance with asthma, improved sleeping patterns, reduced stress, and an improved immune system have also been proven to result from altitude simulation.

Here at Tri Goals, Vicki and I prefer to use io Altitude Simulation leading up to any big races to get the extra edge in our endurance and stamina so that we can line up at the start line with extra confidence in our training. io is a passive programme so you don’t risk over training your muscles but still get the astounding benefits of living at altitude.
